THE GWS Giants have announced that they have signed Lachie Whitfield to a contract extension that will keep him with the club until at least the end of the 2016 season.
“For Lachie to have made this decision while still in his first year at the club is a great endorsement of the Giants and a great endorsement of expansion into Western Sydney and Canberra,” said Giants Chief Executive David Matthews.
“I want to thank all the players including Lachie who have committed to the Giants for the faith they have shown in the club. They clearly believe we have an exciting future and they want to be part of it.”
Whitfield, 19, was the number one overall pick of the 2012 National Draft nad has played in 18 games so far this year, his debut season, and has averaged 17 possessions a game. He was also awarded with a AFL Rising Star nomination for his strong performance in Round 10 against Carlton.
“I’m rapt to have re-signed until the end of 2016. I’m loving Sydney and loving what the club is providing for me,” said Whitfield.
“I’m really excited about the future here at the Giants with the new headquarters on track to be ready for next year which will give us first class facilities to train and prepare in.
“Leon Cameron has done a lot for me this season and I’m looking forward to continuing to develop my game under him,” he said.
The signing of Whitfield makes him the 25th player who has now re-signed with the Giants, a list that includes Jeremy Cameron, Dylan Shiel, Adam Treloar, Stephen Coniglio, Devon Smith, Dom Tyson, Nick Haynes, Adam Kennedy, Toby Greene, Adam Tomlinson, Jonathan Giles, Will Hoskin-Ellitot and Curtly Hampton.
GWS will play Richmond this afternoon at Skoda Stadium in what will be head coach Kevin Sheedy’s final game in Sydney.
