FREMANTLE have extended the contract of dynamic small forward Michael Walters until the end of the 2016 season.
Walters, who still has a year to run on his current deal, was rewarded for his explosive form this season.
Affectionately known to his teammates as ‘Son Son’, Walters made his AFL debut for Fremantle in 2009 and has played 29 games and kicked 55 goals.
It has not always been smooth sailing for Walters after he was sent to Swan Districts in the WAFL at the start of the last season for failing to meet the physical requirements of an AFL player.
He returned to the Dockers line up for the Round 16 clash with Melbourne and played every game for the remainder of the season.
This year, Walters has been a stand out in and injury depleted Fremantle side. He played in the first eight games, including booting four goals in Fremantle’s Round 7 win over Collingwood, before injuring his ankle in the draw to Sydney in Round 8.
Walters is excited for what the future holds at the Dockers and is grateful to the club for sticking by him.
“The club is heading in the right direction and we’ve got a lot of young players coming through,” he said.
“It means a lot that the club has shown faith in me. I see a bright future and I’m hoping to be a part of it.”
Walters will miss this weekend’s clash with Adelaide at AMMI Stadium on Saturday night and with a bye the following week he should be available for Fremantle’s clash with the Brisbane Lions at Patersons Stadium on June 15.
